About Jaiwalker...
Jairaj Kapadia
was born on June 29, 1934, in Bombay, India. He was schooled at Kabibai
High School and graduated from the prestigious Sydenham College of Commerce and
Economics in Bombay. More than 50 of his 70 years in age have gone into
making a success of a much diverse career in journalism, business and in
industry, not in any rich and developed country, but in a still developing
country, India. His career spans fields such as business development,
corporate strategy, branding, management consultancy, and journalism.
A freelance journalist while at college, he wrote a weekly feature in The
Bombay Chronicle, which was titled "Colleges and Collegians". On
graduation he took to full-time journalism, writing in the business section of
The Indian Express which was edited by a top name in the field, Frank Moraes.
From there he was called upon by the editor of Commerce to join the high
profile weekly publication with a stellar reputation. He rose to the
position of executive editor at The Current Weekly, a socio-political tabloid
founded and edited by D. F. Karaka, the celebrated author of "From Dust He
Made Us Men", a book on Mahatma Gandhi.
Thereafter, he went into the world of business, picked by the doyen of
India’s industry, Mr. G D. Birla, to consult for his business group, which rivaled the other top
leading business house, Tatas. He represented all of the Birla Group
with vastly diversified business ranging from manufacture of bicycles and
automobiles, textiles and fiber, metals and machinery, agricultural products
and fertilizers, sugar and cooking oil, cables, chemicals and cement. As an
independent consultant he worked for another leading business group, the
Mafatlals, which pioneered petrochemicals in India, working closely with Mr.
Arvind N. Mafatlal, the patriarch. Dr. N. M. Dhuldhoya, a Mafatlal CEO, also
enlisted Jairaj's services during his term of office as president of one of
India’s three federal trade and industries bodies, the Associated Chamber
of Commerce and Industry.
Even as he moved to the world of business the editors for whom he had worked
demanded he continue to contribute to their publications. Journalism thus
remained the cradle of his career. Prominent editors like TIME magazine
award winner D. K. Rangnekar (Business Standard), Dr. Krishna Raj (Economic and
Political Weekly), and Subhash Chandra Sarker (Commerce) enlisted him at the
same time to write in-depth, analytical articles on industry, capital markets
and the corporate sector. He also regularly contributed to other leading
publications such as India Today, BusinessWorld and New Delhi. The
biweekly column, Up and Down The Market, in Business Standard, which he wrote
for 12 years running, was avidly read. It focused on the interests of
common shareholders and investors, held both business leaders and market
regulators accountable, and more often than not accurately analyzed the market
trend.
Jairaj has preferred writing in print media in pseudonym. He has been
TYCOON plus ARCHER of Business Standard, MONITOR of New Delhi, ARTYMON of
BusinessWorld and MIHIRA of Commerce. He is JAIWALKER in his present writings
in the U.S.
